The first filming day of the “Virtuosos” project began with reunions of old friends and the excitement of new connections. Many jury members have been part of the show for several years, while some are diving into this project for the first time.
Dimash reunited with Plácido Domingo Jr., a singer, composer, and producer. In a short introductory video, the musicians introduced each other with mutual admiration. Dimash said, “First of all, let me introduce one of the greatest composers and one of the most talented musicians in the world – Maestro Domingo Jr.” Mr. Domingo responded warmly, saying, “Thank you, Dimash, for such a kind introduction! Let me introduce one of the most extraordinary voices in the world, with a range of over five octaves – or perhaps six, I’ve lost count. It’s an honor to be here and work together on the jury. Last year, we had an amazing time.”
Dimash also met Yinuo Wang, a talented soprano from China who has gained fame for her exceptional artistry in Europe and Asia. Given Dimash’s extensive experience performing in China, the artists found plenty of common ground for conversation.
Another new acquaintance was with Hungarian clarinetist István Kohán, who lives in Tokyo and is one of the most prominent contemporary wind soloists. The musicians discussed the cities and countries where they live and work.
The first day featured the recording of the show’s first semi-final. The filming took place in Hungary’s largest modern studio. The beautifully updated stage combined the elegance of classical aesthetics with vibrant colors, reflecting the youthful energy of the talented contestants.
Before the recording began, Imre Szabó-Stein, the director and executive producer of the anniversary season, reminded everyone that each semi-final would feature 10 performances – two participants from each country.
Mr. Szabó-Stein has led globally recognized projects over the past decade, including the Bartók World Competition and Festival, the Eva Marton International Opera Competition, and the international media strategy for the renowned “Concerto Budapest Symphony Orchestra”, which will perform as the orchestra during the grand finale.
The director shared with Dimash some nuances of evaluating young contestants, emphasizing that even if a performance is far from perfect, offering encouragement as a jury member is incredibly important.
Before filming began, Dimash personally thanked Mariann Peller, the producer and founder of the project. He expressed his gratitude, saying that his dream of performing on the same stage as the legendary Plácido Domingo came true thanks to her efforts.
