About the Black Sheepskin Coat

A parable about duty and devotion, honor and love, betrayal and purification through suffering.

In his play, Georgy Khugaev turns to the language of Aesopian allegory. His characters are animals — yet through them, one can easily recognize familiar patterns of human behavior and distinct life philosophies. Each animal embodies a specific human trait:
the hare — gentleness, the raven — wisdom, the donkey — perseverance, the fox — cunning pragmatism, and the wolf leader — treachery and deceit.

Director Askhat Maemirov uses metaphor and symbolism to weave together opposing systems of values, revealing the righteousness of some and the corruption of others through vivid emotional imagery and dramatic conflict that rises to tragic heights.

In Maemirov’s artistic vision, the characters reconstruct scenes reminiscent of everyday reality — a tyrannical boss, treacherous friends, career-driven colleagues, and a determined lover. Through them, the play exposes deception, corruption, and moral decay with ruthless clarity.

“There is emotional theatre and rational theatre,” says Maemirov. “The Black Sheepskin Coat belongs to the latter — it aims to awaken the audience’s mind, to inspire reflection and spiritual renewal. In today’s world, the cult of materialism prevails. We want to draw attention back to what is truly human — to spirituality.”
“This parable is a treasure trove of imagery — it combines drama, irony, and self-irony. I work according to Mikhail Chekhov’s method, encouraging actors to become co-authors of their roles. We conducted many psychological workshops where they fully transformed into their characters. To bring the story closer to the audience, I used not only the stage but also the auditorium itself.”
