Peru is a colorful exotic country located in the west of South America. It is rich in variety of beautiful landscapes, from green valleys and plateaus to the majestic Andes.

Ancient Peru was a place of constantly replacing civilizations, so modern Peruvian culture is very diverse. The main language here is Spanish, but at the same time in Peru there are more than forty indigenous languages such as Quechua and Aymara.

At the same time, Peru is one of the most musical countries in the world. There is no doubt that music is one of the most important expressions of the human soul, transmitting the culture of the country to all parts of the globe.

“Flight of the Condor” (“El Cóndor Pasa”) is the name of a musical composition that is rightfully the cultural hallmark of Peru as it is the one that represents the most real, pure and sincere feelings of Peruvians.

Daniel Alomia Robles is the author of this wonderful piece of music that you can hear a part of Peru in its melody. He was born in Huanuco on January 3, 1871 and died in Lima on July 17, 1942. Since childhood, young Alomia has visited various beautiful places in Peru, studying music from different regions and collecting songs that have been passed down from generation to generation.

As a result of its long journey throughout the Peruvian territory, Alomia Robles wrote the musical composition “Flight of the Condor” (“El Cóndor Pasa”) in 1913. The name of the composition is dedicated to the Andean condor, which plays an important role in the folklore and mythology of the Andes regions of Peru and South America.

The premiere of Flight of the Condor took place on December 19, 1913 at the Mazzi Theater in Lima. The piece symbolizes the magic and splendor of the Andean condor, demonstrating the desire for freedom and justice for the indigenous people who were abused at the time by the mining companies.

The novelty in this piece is the amazing and unusual combination of Spanish zarzuela with Andean rhythms. The composition used cello, double bass, flute, trombone, trumpet, clarinet, and percussion instruments. It was the first piece of music in Peru to carry a revolutionary connotation.

You can feel how the soul separates from the body and flies like an Andean condor, free, proudly spreading its wings over the high peaks of the Andes while listening to this melody. Feel the soft and warm light of the sunset, filled with melancholy and feelings of the past civilization, which is still alive in the culture, customs and philosophy of the people of Peru. “Flight of the Condor” shows the spiritual unity, feelings and harmony of ancestors with earth, nature and space.

Almost 107 years have passed since the creation of the legendary “Flight of the Condor” and it still remains the most famous Peruvian composition. It has been translated into more than 100 languages. There are more than 4000 different versions and 300 texts that were performed by famous artists of both the last and the present centuries. Its chords are reminiscent of the splendor of a bygone era, the mighty Inca Empire, a thousand-year-old culture that will never disappear despite the fleeting flow of time.
